Only plant in the world producing cobalt from 'byproduct'

Mardin Mazıdağı Metal Recovery & Integrated Fertilizer Plant, the first and only plant in the world to recover cobalt from pyrite concentrate, consists of 5 main factories and 12 auxiliary production facilities.  With an investment of USD 1.2 billion, Mazıdağı plant is the largest private sector investment in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia and recovers cobalt, nickel, manganese, iron and copper from pyrite concentrate coming from Küre Plant.

The cobalt which the plant recovers from byproducts is used extensively in batteries and catalysts, as well as in the key sectors of the 21st century such technology, petrochemicals, electric cars and the aircraft industry. With an annual production of 2,500 tons, the plant alone accounts for 2% of the world's cobalt production. The cobalt produced is processed into end products at Cengiz Holding's ICoNiChem plant in Widnes, England, and exported all over the world.

At the same time, our Mazıdağı facility, which is the only factory in Turkey that produces fertilizer with 100% domestic raw materials, has an annual DAP fertilizer production capacity of 400,000 tons. Thanks to the phosphate rock in our production area, we also produce phosphate compound fertilizer (NPK) in our facility, and we support Turkish farmers with economical prices created through efficient and domestic production.

With the productions carried out, our facility, which prevents annual fertilizer and metal imports of 620 million dollars, provides employment for 1,460 people. Two-thirds of this workforce consists of the local people.
